Architectural Record, and my alma mater, the Tulane University School of Architecture, are teaming up to launch two-fold design competition – Rebuilding The Big Easy: An International Competition for New Housing in New Orleans.
Open only to current architecture students is a competition to design a single family housing prototype while professionals are given the challenge of designing multifamily housing for a specific site on Chartres Street. Participants are encouraged to consider sustainability and use prefabricated materials whenever possible. Also note that the competition welcomes “visionary” proposals, but encourages contestants to consider that New Orleans faces a severe crisis, and is in need of practical, affordable solutions.
Rules and entry forms will be online beginning December 1st, and the entry deadline is March 1st, 2006.
